Texas men’s basketball junior Mikey Lewis set to miss ‘extended’ time after foot fracture

Texas men’s basketball won’t tip off its 2026-27 season until late October; however, head coach Sean Miller’s squad has already been hit with unfortunate news.

The team announced in a statement on Wednesday that junior guard Mikey Lewis sustained a fracture in the fifth metatarsal in his right foot earlier this week.

Lewis is scheduled to undergo surgery on Thursday, with his recovery keeping him out of action for a while. The injury, surgery and recovery time are not expected to cost the entirety of his junior season, according to the statement.

“Lewis is expected to miss an extended period of time with his recovery, but this is not expected to be a season-ending injury,” the statement read.

The third-year guard is one of five transfers that Miller brought in for the 2026-27 season to construct his roster. Lewis was ranked No. 16 among combo guards in the transfer portal by 247Sports after spending his first two seasons at Saint Mary’s.

In his two seasons at Saint Mary’s, Lewis averaged 11 points per game, shooting 40.0 from the field, 37.1 from three and 84.4 from the free-throw line while adding 2.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game.

Lewis left the Gaels with two honors under his belt, being named First Team All-West Coast Conference as a sophomore a year ago and the WCC’s Sixth Man of the Year as a freshman for the 2024-25 season.

The loss of Lewis for an extended period of time is a blow to the Longhorns’ backcourt, as the junior was expected to add a veteran presence, being one of just three upperclassmen guards on the roster.

In Lewis’ absence, the freshman trio of guards — Austin Goosby, Bo Ogden and Joe Sterling — will now likely have more opportunities to see the court through the non-conference portion of the schedule.

“Mikey’s a big piece of the team, and we’ll be with him while he’s recovering that foot … and that’ll make us an even better team,” Ogden said. “But in the meantime, guys got to step up and fill that gap.”
